A selection of designs inspired by the short lived Dutch art movement called
De Stijl (The Style)
De Stijl is a Dutch art movement that has always fascinated me, but like so many art movements, it was so short lived which makes it an enigma. When you study Piet Mondrian and how he came to develop this style with other contributing artists and furniture makers, and their mission statement, the movement becomes fascinating.
Mondrian was an accomplished artist, but the unsettled political events that led to the Great War, forced him to return to the Netherlands and in his confinement he began to question what he was seeing. He painted the limited vistas over and over again, but each time removed some detail until there were just lines.
I always thought this art to be simple, but there is complexity in the simplicity. It took me many failed samples to understand the ratios of proportion, the thickness of the line, the size of the coloured blocks and to get just the right hues of the yarn to compliment the surrounding colours, and now I am able to offer my interpretation of this movement in needlepoint form.
